A Contra-dance

I am lucky.

I live a 4.5 mile walk through the woods from the closest contra-dance. If I leave at the very start of dinner, I can get there by part of the way through the lesson.

It's exhilarating to be able to live in the middle of nowhere (no cell phone reception, in 1600 acres of wilderness, surrounded by a thick buffer of state parks and forests, & the closest town's highlights are a pottery studio and a gas station/Mexican restaurant combo)...

... and be able to transport myself by foot or bike to an evening out.

I think that's what I want in a greater sense.

Sometimes I have daydreams about the end of oil, and the rebuilding of local communities, and the liberation of roads into bicycle paths. And then, of course, eventually bicycles would corrode. But probably not in my lifetime.

In the meantime, this is a start.

Fame from the Fall

Our camp was featured on Making it Grow, a south carolina public access tv show about gardening. They filmed us in September, and we had some 5th graders from Brevard Academy come and see abreviated versions of our invertebrate class and animal adaptation class, plus experience the whole process of gardening from composting to preparing a garden bed, to collecting seeds from summer lettuce, to planting those seeds and watering them with our rainwater.

Probably more exciting for me than for the kids.

Click here, and find the video from 1/27/09. Fastforward to 2/3 of the way through the episode.

The humming resonance

My brain/soul are full of inspiration that rubbed off on me like some kind of loose glitter over the course of the last 2 months. I wish that I had time to process it, and record all of these musings, but I am (by design) being tossed headfirst back into work. Interesting, isn't it, that coming back from travels, I feel like I need a vacation or at least some kind of solitary confinement to record and organize and prepare? Ahhh I am so spoiled by the good life.

Just a few of my current favorite things:
public art that I can TOUCH & interact with
cayenne pepper liquid chocolate at Cacao in Portland
foot-stompin' booty-shakin' live music
alllll the beautiful people in the world (you and youetc. especially)
